The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This lovely desk was a fabulous purchase! The price point is excellent for the quality. The legs are solid wood and although the desktop is MDF, it has a lovely grain is very heavy and looks expensive. There is no drawer so we added some lovely leather accoutrements for storage and a desk pad. We have a small office so the openness of the desk gives a feeling of space in the room.
