It is actually pretty soft to the touch (way softer than a jute or sisal rug). It doesn’t smell at all and was packaged well with several moisture absorbing packets. I have a mirror over the bed that has a similar design. Also got a pad for under from the carpet/flooring store that did our new wood floors.
