The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I like the desk however the package was large & extremely heavy. I couldn’t understand why the delivery people had only 1 guy deliver it. When I saw that I knew there’s was a chance of it being damaged. Once I started to assemble the desk, I noticed the first crack upon opening the box. I didn’t notice the other crack in the tabletop board until 75% completely assembled. I called wayfair to report the damages & they were considerate & offered to send out replacement parts instead of me having to disassemble the entire desk, which I appreciated. Waiting on parts now.
