The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I was looking to downsize my home office desk and wanted a minimalist look. This checked all my boxes. Reviews were spot on regarding it being sturdy and easy to put together. It did come with a few minor dings, but they weren’t visible. The only issue was the drawer had a small cracksplit in it. Something to note the drawer cannot be replaced on its own. I reached out to Wayfair about a new drawer and they were prepared to replace the entire desk. Since everything else was great, I opted to keep it. My husband glued it it came out meh lol, but fortunately the drawer is tucked underneath, so it’s not a deal breaker. I love the look and the colors. Drawer operates well too.
