The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. The user manual is 50 pages long - I'm already estimating it will take at least 4 hours to assemble! And according to the manual, 2 people are needed in order to flip certain parts. I got this small desk for my personal use. It’s because I have a lot of computers with large screens for work. I took me a while to put it together but I did it. It was not hard, I just had to make time to do it. The desk is sturdy, that main legs are steel . I had a hard time putting the key board holder in but after a 2nd try I did install it.
