The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. This castellated palace was most notably home to Princess Charlotte, daughter of King Leopold II and lies within the lush surroundings of the Belgian national botanical gardens in meise near Antwerp. The bouchout castle is a castle in Belgium dating from the 12th century. The stronghold later became a water castle surrounded by a park. Bouchout Castle has seen many changes through the years. The square tower, the oldest remaining part of the castle and dates from the 14th century. A famous inhabitant of the castle was Empress Charlotte (Carlota of Mexico), sister of King Leopold II and widow of the executed Emperor of Mexico. Charlotte lived in the castle for most of her life.
