It is not smooth but rather interesting to the touch. I don't see fingerprints on the top, and the bottom shelf allows for keeping magazines, books or decorative art in an out-of-the way but visible area. I would buy this again because the quality here is just incredible - Solid - which you don't find very often. (The website shows the assembly guide!) The worst I can say is that it came without instructions so it was a guesstimation putting it together.
