These are lovely candles, even when they aren't on. Narrow but surprisingly heavy base is perfect for narrow windowsills without being easily knocked over. The ""Technology Smarts"" of these candles is in the bulbs. Each bulb has a dual-sided LED design: position the bright side of the bulb towards the street (by easily rotating the plastic candlestick within the base). Then use the enclosed remote to select (a) whether you want the candle to twinkle or remain steady on (b) pick a timer (from 6, 8 and 12 hour durations) or (c) simply turn the candle off an on remotely by remote. If you set a time, the timer starts and counts down from the moment you press the remote's timer button. These candles have a clever trick: buy using a rubber gasket stored within the base, you can apply the gasket to the candle taper bottom and change the height from 9 to 11 inches (handy if you have windows where a 9"" candle might look too short). Using 3 AA batteries in each, these candles lasted 50 days using the 6 hour timer setting, and probably could have gone longer. I set one candle continuously on as an interior decoration and it lasted 40 days before its light was just too dim. I struggled to get replacement bulbs for these; Plow and Hearth kept them on backorder until I gave up and ordered from another source.
