It was flat but you simply pop it open, put the liner inside and you are ready to use. As you can see, it is pretty deep for storage purposes. There is also not a smell so I feel good about using for storage immediately. Likewise, this is pretty lightweight so you can move to a lot of places and the compact size will fit well in various spaces. I recommend as a cute storage piece. Just to note, I ordered this 3 times before it was actually delivered.
