Working in the traditional style of traditional folk art alebrijes, Mexican duo Pablo and Lucy Mendez create this charming cat figurine. The cat is carved of copal wood, its black body hand-painted with intricate floral motifs and dots in fiery tones of orange. Alebrijes are a fairly recent Mexican art form, attributed to Pedro Linares. Unconscious due to illness in 1936, he was presumed near death and yet his dreams were extremely vivid. He tells of a place where all was peaceful and quiet until all of a sudden there appeared a lion with an eagle's head, a rooster with bull's horns and a donkey with butterfly wings. They kept screeching "alebrije, alebrije!" and Pedro began running away. He encountered a man who told him it was not yet his time to be there are and he should continue running towards the exit. In this dream Pedro climbed out of a window and regained consciousness.

Celebrating the condor and its impressive size and strength, the yawar ("blood" in Quechua) fiesta takes place in Peru's Apurimac and Ayacucho regions. The condor represents the people of Peru, while the bull represents the Spanish. If the condor flies, this augurs a good harvest, and musicians accompany the event. Alejandro Chávez crafts the wooden box to house this retablo, or diorama and paints it in vivid colors. The figures are carefully modeled from ceramic plaster and painted by hand.

This Lifelike Diamondback Rattlesnake Sculpture measures 11.5" tall, 8" long and 6" deep approximately. It weighs about 2.5 pounds.

This is an awesome rattlesnake. It looks like a real live snake that was covered with resin to dry. Put side by side, the only way one could tell the difference would be when the real live one moves. Size is accurate, coloring is accurate, shape is accurate. We bought this statue for our desert landscape backyard and it fits perfectly with the cactus’, coyote, bobcat, wild boar, donkey’s, skunk, rabbits, lights and rocks. Looks natural. This is definitely NOT a toy. It is not bendable or shapeable. It is not a cute snake. It is a real representation of a live rattlesnake getting ready to bite (I know because I’ve seen several up close and personal). It seems fairly tough, but I would not grab it and toss it around. Because it is the shape of a snake, it is a thin narrow type statue and if treated too rough it might break. This is a show piece only but a beautiful one at that. Artisan Luis Morales of Mexico crafts a remarkable ceramic Catrina to grace your mantel or shelf. Formed by hand from clay, her ensemble refers to that of the main character in the 1944 film, Maria Candelaria. Her gown is carefully painted in purple with lilac flowers and lacy gold trim. Her hair is braided and she holds a basket filled with fruits and vegetables. The elegant figure is based on a satirical etching created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada around 1910-1913. With his etching, Posada poked fun at those Mexican natives who tried to emulate the fashion and habits of the European aristocracy. Today, la Catrina has become the instantly recognizable icon of Mexico's Day of the Dead.

Working in the time-honored tradition of papier mache, Mohammad Hussain Baba creates these sweet figurines. The beings repeatedly uttered the word alebrije. Upon recovering, Linares recreated these figures in bright colors using papier mache techniques and called them alebrijes. His work became famous and was one of the main influences of artisans in the state of Oaxaca who began crafting alebrijes of their own using traditional wood carving methods.
