Very nice rug in subtle colors. However, its appearance is a little more like a soft, velvety blanket than a regular woven rug. ‘Salvator Mundi’ is Latin for ‘Savior of the World.’ One of the few known paintings by Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1500, ‘Salvator Mundi’ depicts Jesus in Renaissance attire, making the sign of the cross with his right hand and holding a crystal orb in his left, which represents the ‘celestial sphere’ of the heavens. There are around 20 known variations of this painting by students and followers of Leonardo and remains his most copied painting. The original was thought to have been lost after the mid-17th century. Various copies have been considered as the original through historical conjecture. In 2005, a Salvator Mundi was presented and acquired at an auction for less than $10,000. It had been heavily overpainted so it looked like a copy. Before restoration, it was described as "a wreck, dark and gloomy." However, the consortium believed that this unkempt painting might actually be the long-lost original by Leonardo. During the restoration process, a stepped area of unevenness was discovered near Christ's face -- it had been shaved down with a sharp object, and leveled with a mixture of gesso, paint and glue, showing an uncertainty in the composition by the artist. Infrared photographs of the painting showed a pentimento (earlier draft -- literally 'repent') of the painting which had the blessing hand's thumb in a straight, rather than curved, position. This is crucial, as it showed the artist had a second thought about the positioning. It was deemed that this is not a copy but indeed an original, since copiers would have no doubts about the placement of Christ’s thumb or the composition. ‘Salvator Mundi’ is the only known Leonardo artwork to be continuously held in private collections and was auctioned for $450.3 million on November 15 2017 in New York to Prince Badr bin Abdullah, setting a new record for the most expensive painting ever sold at public auction. The current location of the painting is uncertain.

This is a really great print to have and will definitely be a conversation starter. Since it is a print, it does have places on it that look like they were scuffed and because it’s from an original, it looks aged. I struggled with what rug to get for our primary suite, and I am happy I settled on this one! It was a really good price, and I think it works well in the space. There is a lot more to do in this space – – we have ordered a picture for above the bed from Wayfair and lamps from another source because I didn’t find exactly what I wanted on Wayfair this time. I’ve also ordered a floor lamp with a scalloped rattan shade for behind the chair from Wayfair – – it is from Joss and Main, which is a Wayfair company. I am really excited to get these other items and will share reviews and photos once I receive them. The rug is soft and easy on the feet, which is what we wanted for this space. There were a number of Jutte rug options that would have worked aesthetically, but it was not the feel we wanted on our feet when we get into an out of our bed. For the next hundred years, Flemish tapestries would set a new standard in technique, color and intricacy of the designs. These captivating antique tapestries were much sought-after, and finding one today is a special treat. So it is exciting to be able to offer this fine example of 16th-century Flemish tapestry weaving along with its interesting story.

While traveling in Greece in the early 1960s, Maija Isola got inspired by the movement of water and depicted it in several prints, including Seireeni (siren) from 1964. Named after the mythological sirens, the pattern also recalls the enchanting singing that lured sailors into dangerous waters.
