Real wood, smells great like that cedar bark smell. Runs a tiny bit small, as I am short and my legs go basically to the end and my head is right at the top. I also am not sure it will hold up to huge people jumping on it or anything, but that's wood planks for ya. Assembly was quite easy, hardly needed the instructions. Torqued the bolts but am expecting to possibly lightly sand and/or stain it later to protect the wood, and possibly add wd-40 to some of the moving parts and lock tite to the bolts.. Alexander. Super disappointed that this item is much shorter than expected. It is about 23 inches high, instead of 29 inches like it was supposed to be. I even called Wayfair before placing the order to make sure I would receive the 29-inch version of this. I thought it was odd that the 29-inch version was less expensive than the 23-inch version, but the Wayfair associate assured me that I was ordering the 29-inch version. The item arrived more than a week later than the originally promised time frame. Also, the finish is a bit lighter than what I expected. There are a few dark marks on the top of the furniture piece that are either from the stain or from sanding that wasn't finished quite right. Otherwise, it seems like a solid, well-made piece.
