The instructions show you the sides swapped with the flat side of the shelf unit facing out - this is a dirty trick. Don’t try it or you off center desk. 3. Swap step 8 and 7. You’ll thank me later. 4. 2-4 hours is a lie IF you follow the directions. I had to rework 3 times which put me at 5-6 hours of putting together. 5. I waited 5 months for this desk to come back into stock. Although it’s the look I wanted, the rework and cussing was not to my satisfaction. This desk arrived on time and was delivered to my top door step. The box weighed just over 100 lbs so I used a dolly to carry it upstairs to my office. It was a workout but I managed unassisted. It took about 20 minutes to unboxed and organize all of the pieces. Everything was clearly labeled, but there are just so many parts. Instructions were clear and easy enough to follow. Clear enough that I had to backtrack once but never had to disassemble anything. I accidentally got lucky doing one step correctly the first time when went back to check again. All of the tools you'll need are included, but the screwdriver is not too comfortable. I swapped it out for one of my own screwdrivers because the one included really hurt when I tightened screwed. There were a few extra screws included in case you dropped one so don't panic when you have one of every piece leftover. In the end, it took about 2.5 hours of build time on top of the 20 minutes unboxing and 10 more to clean up at the end. I did this myself without power tools. I'm not sure why some "handy" people needed 6 hours. As for the color, it is black. I was worried because one review mentioned it having a brown tone to it. It is solid particle board with black, wood grain laminate on the outside. I have it in my office with other black furniture and black picture frames. It matches everything perfectly. I didn't like the drawer pull handles so I swapped them out with others I found in Wayfair when I swapped out handles on another desk. This way everything matches. It's a solid build as far as particle board goes. The drawers have a flimsy bottom so don't overload them. The keyboard drawer has a wooden bottom and can handle a little more weight. The lock on the file cabinet simply latches on to a small piece of wood that could either be unscrewed after removing the middle drawer or by pulling too hard and snapping that tiny board. This worked out even better than I'd hoped. For one thing, it's a lot more solid than most flat-pack, self-assemble pieces. The desk and hutch top in particular are almost as hefty as real hardwood. And although it takes a bit of effort to put together, the machining and alignment of parts was really good (at least for my unit). It's not unusual for some of these to need a little extra help squeezing things together because a couple of the pre-drilled holes are ~1/32" off true in different directions, but not this time. One caveat: because it's nice and heavy and doesn't skimp on the fastener points, getting the hutch bolted onto the desk can be pretty tough if you're doing it solo. You'd need a hell of a strong back if you wanted to stand over the desk holding the ~40lb hutch arms wide while you gently line it up with the 8+ bolts sticking out from the desktop. I managed to make it work by putting everything together face-down on the floor and shimming the hutch up with a couple of foam mattresses, then standing it up once everything was bolted together. Fortunately, the sturdiness of construction meant I wasn't worried it would split under its own weight while I levered the whole thing upright. P.S. Nicely built, lots of storage for needed items. Great lighting although hard to find where located. Delivery was attempted too early without contact. Young men were strong but when I requested they take off wrapping in garage area, they didn’t listen and brought pieces inside and I had to clean area behind them. They didn’t argue just didn’t do what I requested. They were fine afterwards and no further issues. I felt bad as they appeared to be concerned that I would give a poor rating which may cause issues with their hiring.
