The whole thing does blow up just fine with the valve open, but it won’t hold up as well without the valve closed with the ties. This is a great buy! I’m in Florida and as long as you drape it over a few chairs and let it dry out no mold has grown on it. You also don’t have to lift it up for it to drain.
