I don’t need it nor do I mind not having it, but it does disappoint me to know part of the price of the desk was for that feature. Haven’t reached out to pursue partial refund, but that’s ok!. I DO recommend the desk as long as you can accept the "CONS" I list. CONS; 1. IMPORTANT, The ledge is not wide enough to safely/securely place the stand of larger monitors. Unless you use a monitor arm I would not recommend this desk if you use anything above a 24" external monitor. 2. The 20" depth might be just a little too short if you are using a laptop with the lid open and an external monitor placed on the desk or ledge. 3. LEDs are not nearly as bright as pictures show. SO-SO The soft side drawers work but not something to brag about. I expected this so wasn't surprised. PROs I'm impressed at how sturdy it is for a light weight desk. Assembly was fairly straight forward as were the instructions that are pretty well written. Everything fit together well and assembly took less than 2 hours with two people. Finals thoughts. If you are using an external monitor I would suggest you consider NOT installing the ledge and use a monitor arm to get the most useable desk space. I did keep the ledge but might remove it later.. I also love the keyboard tray because it is lower than the desk itself, which means I can lower my chair so my feet actually lay flat on the floor. Few things to note 1. Don’t try to swap the drawer sides or you have a massive gap on the side from the desktop 2. The instructions show you the sides swapped with the flat side of the shelf unit facing out - this is a dirty trick. Don’t try it or you off center desk. 3. Swap step 8 and 7. You’ll thank me later. 4. 2-4 hours is a lie IF you follow the directions. I had to rework 3 times which put me at 5-6 hours of putting together. 5. I waited 5 months for this desk to come back into stock. Although it’s the look I wanted, the rework and cussing was not to my satisfaction.
