The draft of the Declaration of Independence is presented to Congress in this historical scene that graces the United States Capitol Rotunda and the back of the U.S. two-dollar bill. Trumbull painted some of the images from life and visited Independence Hall to depict the chamber accurately. Though the signing took place over time and the signers were never actually in a room together, Trumbull was able to portray 42 of the actual 56 signers by locating source images. This is a reproduction of Edward Percy Moran's The First Resistance. The illustration depicts the Colonists confronting British soldiers at Lexington, MA. When the advance guard of nearly 240 British soldiers arrived in Lexington, they found about 70 minutemen awaiting them. The British troops were ordered to seize and destroy military supplies, including weapons and ammunition, that were reportedly stored by colonial militia in the towns of Lexington and Concord. The British intended to assert their authority over the rebellious colonies and suppress any signs of resistance.

The six-month encampment of General George Washington’s Continental Army at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778 was a major turning point in the American Revolutionary War. While conditions were notoriously cold and harsh and provisions were in short supply, it was at the winter camp where George Washington proved his mettle, and whipped his troops into some semblance of a fighting force.
