Alocasia is easy care in the right location. It takes sun or shade but seems to do best in part shade where it might get early morning or late day sun, mixed with dappled light through the afternoon. This moderate grower can be planted anywhere in South Florida, though it may die back when cold weather hits. For leaves year round, grow in Zone 10. Plant in a protected area so winter takes less of a toll and wind doesn't damage the leaves. These plants tend to prefer a part sun to part shade location, and grow to about 3 or 4 feet. Commonly known as upright elephant ear, Alocasia macrorrhiza's glossy, bright green leaves add an exotic look to beds, borders and pots. The big paddle-shaped leaves are held upright to shed water and make room for companion plants below. The only trimming needed is to remove a dead or dying leaf and stem now and then. Water on a regular basis...and do it more often for plants in full sun. Landscape uses for alocasia odora: foundation plant under low windows, accent in a mixed bed, grouped in a naturalized area, along a porch or patio, surrounding a palm or tree.

One of the most colorful Dracaena varieties available. The red tinted foliage adds a decorative accent to any room. May be grown outdoors during frost-free weather. Use it as a potted plant, in the garden, or mixed with colorful annual plants in a large patio planter. Its easy to care for, requiring little light or water, and is quite hardy in most temperatures. The Madagascar Dragon Tree is characterized by long, narrow leaves that are extremely spiky. The foliage is generally dark green with edges that are adorned with a reddish purple and can grow up to 16 inches in length. As the tree grows, it will naturally lose its lowest leaves leaving tufts of leaves atop a bare woody cane. Marginata is the coolest looking variety. It grows slower than the other varieties, but has a much more vibrant red pink coloration. Dragon trees do best in partial shade. This means that if youre growing indoors, you should have it on a north-facing windowsill, near one facing east or west, and further away from one facing south. You will know youre giving the plant too much light if the leaves burn. On the flip side, youll know you arent giving it enough light when the accent colors on the leaves start to fade.

Dracaena Janet Craig is an interior workhorse, popular for decades, used frequently as a floor plant in interior situations or mass planted in beds. Survives in low light levels, grows best in filtered light. Dracaenas thrive on neglect, grow well in low light, and need very little water. These attractive plants have sword- shaped, leathery, dark green, shiny leaves that are about 3 wide and 2ft. in length. NASA lists the dracaena janet craig as an excellent clean air plant that helps eliminate harmful toxins from the environment. It is a strongly upright plant that tends to drop its lower leaves, exposing the stalk as it ages. This plant should be grown in bright indirect sunlight, but is known to tolerate lower light levels. Dracaenas require even moisture, good soil drainage, and cannot tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH.

Handsome, sturdy specimen with exceptionally straight trunk topped by glossy, feathery fronds. Great vertical effect for large gardens. Useful for park and street plantings. Evergreen. With its crinkled fronds, Queen is among the most graceful of the palms. This stately landscape palm grows more frost tolerant as it ages, but won't stand up to a hard or prolonged freeze. A good candidate for oceanfront landscapes and larger homesites inland, provided there are few gusts of hot wind to tatter its fronds. The best and most adaptable candidate for tropical, semitropical and postmodern landscapes. Although it casts little shade, this palm makes a fine street tree. Grow as a single specimen or in clusters of three to five. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.

The ficus Alii, or Amstel King as it is sometimes called, is a large plant that originally came from Asia, Malaysia, and India. It was first grown commercially in Hawaii where it got the Hawaiian name alii which means king. Although a ficus Alii is closely related to the ficus Benjamina, the Alii variety is much more tolerant and forgiving. The long, narrow leaves are naturally glossy and taper to a point. As this ficus tree grows, it may drop its lower leaves revealing a bare woody trunk, giving this tree a palm-like appearance. Care is easier than for many of its relatives. You'll find it's less temperamental than F. benjamina, that drops its leaves when it doesn't get what it wants. However, leaf drop is possible with 'Alii' if it doesn't get enough light and regular waterings. The Ficus alii standard image that you can see here got its name from its single upright trunk. Its long slender dark green leaves provides an oriental look. This appeal makes it an extremely attractive plant that is appealing both to the interior plantscape industry and to the home market. Moreover, it is believed to have the ability to purify the air. Growth tips are pronounced pink to red that beautifully contrasts against its broad, longer, wider, banana-shaped glossy leaves.

Calatheas are beautiful house plants grown for their stunning foliage. The top sides of the leaves look as if they have been painted with beautiful brushstrokes they're often intricately patterned, in many shades of green. The undersides of the leaves are often burgundy red. This striking foliage has earned calatheas several nicknames, including the peacock plant, cathedral window plant, zebra plant and rattlesnake plant. Calatheas are also sometimes called the prayer plant as they are closely related to the maranta plant, also known as the prayer plant. However unlike marantas, they do not close their leaves up at night. Many calathea varieties have recently been moved into the genus Goeppertia, so you may now find them being sold under this name. The light requirements make this plant an attractive choice for lower-light homes, but please note: These plants do poorly in direct sun, which can bleach the leaves. Place your prayer plant in a part of a room that receives low to bright indirect light. As a rule, the darker the foliagesuch as with the calathea ornatathe lower the light requirements. Like all houseplants, calathea enjoy filtered or dechlorinated water and can be a little more demanding than other houseplants. Simply fill your watering can and leave it overnight to dissipate the chlorine. If there are other chemicals in your tap water, try using filtered or distilled water instead. Prayer plants enjoy a humid environment, but many varieties can handle lower levels of humidity. Ideally, they prefer a humidity level of 50 percent or more, with more sensitive varieties requiring higher humidity levelsaround 60 percent.

The Pencil Cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli) also commonly called milk bush due to its thick, white sap is native to semi-arid tropical regions of Africa and India. In the wild, the Pencil Cactus can grow up to 30 feet tall and well over 6 feet indoors. This stem succulent is not a true cactus and photosynthesizes in its stems, not through the small leaves that appear at the end of its new growth (which are inconsequential to the plants health). The plants have slender, slightly toothed stems without any foliage growth. The name derives from the branches, which are about the diameter of a pencil. When new branches sprout, the end of the branch can be tinted slightly pink and tiny leaves may appear. These leaves will disappear once the branch matures. The pencil cactus needs high levels of light and moderately low moisture. It is an excellent houseplant and provides an interesting silhouette.

The plant is characterized by dark green, downward facing leaves that are marked with clean, bold chartreuse variegation. It is notable for its strong, consistent color and durability as a house plant. Like other Dracaena plants, Hawaiian Sunshine is fairly low maintenance and adaptable. Hawaiian Sunshine is grown easily as a houseplant, accepting a variety of lighting conditions. Bright, indirect light is ideal, though Hawaiian Sunshine will tolerate dimmer light. Dracaenas prefer daytime house temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and nighttime temperatures that are about 10 degrees cooler. These tropical plants can grow outdoors only in frost-free conditions. Warneckii' dracaena (Dracaena deremensis 'Warneckii') is a green dracaena cultivar with white stripes along the edges of its leaves. It is a shorter dracaena that matures to a height of only 4 feet tall. While its low light requirements make it easy to grow indoors, it can also be grown in shady sites outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10b and 11. Other cultural requirements for 'Warneckii' are also fairly easy to meet. When these requirements are not met, or if it is exposed to a common chemical, the leaves tend to develop unsightly brown tips. Overwatering, underwatering and dry conditions can cause dracaena brown spots on 'Warneckii' leaves. It should generally be watered once per week but this varies, depending on the season and humidity levels. In dry homes or dry outdoor conditions in spring, summer and fall, 'Warneckii' dracaena may need to be watered more often. A 'Warneckii' dracaena grown in a container should be watered until the water drains from the bottom. Empty the water from the catch basin below the container. 'Warneckii' does not require high humidity but, if the humidity level is less than 40 percent, the leaf tips may turn brown and brittle.

Mass cane (Dracaena fragrans Massangeana or Dracaena fragrans) is also known as corn plant and is one of several popular varieties of Dracaena, including Dracaena lisa, Dracaena marginata, and Dracaena compacta. It has stalky stems and long, green leaves with light-yellowlight-green stripes running through them. It is an easy-to-grow houseplant that requires little maintenance (and even puts up with neglect), making it a great choice for beginners. Although originally from Africa, the mass cane is popular throughout many homes and offices in the U.S. and the U.K. because it is a low-maintenance beauty. For those who are lucky enough, the corn plant may even produce clusters of fragrant white flowers, though this is very rare. Growing the dracaena as indoor plants using different cane lengths, with each cane having sprouted a new head or heads of foliage, makes Dracaena fragrans excellent as a tall indoor specimen. Like all plants, the corn plant produces oxygen and makes the air in your home healthier for all of your family. However, the corn plant is especially good for improving air quality, as it also absorbs toxins. The NASA Clean Air Study found that Dracaena plants remove toxic substances from the air, including formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, and trichloroethylene The corn plant is slow growing, so it does not need frequent pruning or maintenance. The slow growth also means it will act as an ornament in your home, happily filling a space where it can remain for some time without becoming too big for the area.

Philodendrons are tropical plants native to Central and South America. These evergreen perennials belong to the Araceae familythe same family as pothos plants. There are hundreds of philodendron species, each with its own unique cultivars. The most common philodendron plants produce long vines or stems adorned with thick, waxy, dark green leaves. They can be planted indoors year-round and are fast growers. Depending on the species of philodendron and the size of the container they're planted in, they can grow anywhere from one to six feet long and equally wide. Philodendrons are also a great plant choice to purify the air in your home. Theyre best planted in the spring, but houseplants typically can be started with success at any time of year. This species typically grows best in partial sunlight. Philodendrons need sun, but they would naturally receive dappled light under a tropical canopy rather than direct light. Indoors, set them up by a window that gets bright, indirect light. Philodendrons like loose potting soil thats rich in organic matter. The soil must have good drainage. For container plants, its recommended to replace your philodendrons soil every couple of years or so. These plants are sensitive to salts that accumulate in the soil via watering, which can cause leaf browning and yellowing. The temperature tolerance of philodendrons varies based on the species. In general, they should not be exposed to temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Indoors protect them from cool drafts, such as those from an air-conditioning vent.

A low-branching, bushy tree originating in Central America, Annona muricata is known as soursop in English and guanabana in El Salvador and other Spanish-speaking countries. The soursop tree, which can grow from 25 to 30 feet tall, produces an oval-shaped fruit with tender yellow-green skin and white, juicy flesh often made into drinks, sherbet, preserves and sweets. Grown in a variety of countries, including Mexico, the West Indies, northern South America, China, Australia and Africa, soursop prefers a tropical climate and cannot survive a frost, often suffering damage at 30 degrees Fahrenheit and dying at 26 degrees Fahrenheit. U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11 in rich, well-drained soil with 5 to 6.5 pH suit this warm-weather plant best. Water soursop plants often enough to keep the soil moist, but not wet, during hot weather. When the weather turns cool in the winter, reduce water intake. Soursop plants tolerate drought well, but can develop pest problems if kept too wet.

If you are lucky enough to live in USDA hardiness zones 8 to 11, you can grow a banana plant (Musa spp.) outdoors and let it get as large and spread as wide as the space you have in your garden. But if you're hankering for a tropical environment and live in a colder zone, you can still grow this stunning specimen indoors in a container. Most types of bananas plants prefer to grow in full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight on most days. However, some varieties can scorch easily and will do better in partial shade. These plants love organically rich, deep soil with good drainage and a slightly acidic soil pH. They typically have poor tolerance for salt in the soil. Banana trees are tropical and originate in rainforests, so they need a lot of water and plenty of moisture in the air. They do best when planted in groups fairly close together, as this helps to retain moisture in the leaves. Water regularly to make sure the soil stays evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot. These plants thrive in warm, humid conditions, but they don't like temperature extremes. Even the hardy, cold-tolerant banana tree species prefer consistent temperatures ranging between 75 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mangoes range in flavor from rich and spicy to sweet and citrusy, and typically ripen during the warmest months of the year. This heat-loving tree thrives in subtropical to tropical climates and adapts well to both ground planting and large containers in warmer zones. Ideal for home gardeners seeking a reliable, productive fruit tree, the Mango Tree offers not only flavorful harvests but also ornamental value, with its dense crown, long leaves, and striking seasonal growth. With the right placement and care, it can become a centerpiece of your edible landscape, orchard, or patio garden. A rewarding tree for growers who appreciate beauty and bounty in one.The 'Malika' mango tree is an exceptional Indian variety that has gained popularity in tropical and subtropical regions for its unique flavor, reliable performance, and suitability for both in-ground and container growing. This semi-dwarf tree is moderately vigorous, making it ideal for home gardeners who want manageable size without sacrificing fruit production. Malika is known for producing oblong to slightly flattened fruits that are medium to large in size and ripen to a golden-yellow color, often with a slight blush depending on sun exposure. The flesh is bright orange, firm, and completely fiberless, offering a smooth and satisfying texture. One of the most appealing aspects of the Malika mango is its complex flavor profilerich and sweet with prominent notes of citrus, melon, and tropical spice, often compared to classic Indian dessert mangoes. It is also unique in that it can be picked mature green and ripened off the tree, allowing for flexibility in harvest and transport. Malika typically fruits mid-season and performs best in warm, sunny environments. With its distinctive flavor, appealing texture, and adaptable growth habit, the Malika mango tree is a top choice for mango lovers looking for something both exotic and practical.

Dracaena Rikki (Dracaena deremenis Rikki) is a relatively new type of dracaena recognized by arching, deep green leaves, each marked with a yellow stripe running lengthwise down the center of the leaves. Dracaena Rikki is a fast-growing plant that reaches heights of 8 to 12 feet at maturity. This tough, low-maintenance plant is suitable for planting outdoors in the warmer climates of U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10b through 11. Dracaena Rikki is a relatively new cultivar belonging to the deremensis species of dracaena. Deremensis is less common than other dracaena species, which include Dracaena marginata, a purple and green plant also known as dragon tree; Dracaena fragrans, commonly known as corn plant; or Dracaena godseffiana, a small, gold-flecked plant known as Gold Dust. Dracaena deremensis cultivars include not only Rikki, but also Janet Craig, Warneckii and Compacta. Dracaena Rikki prefers a shaded area or dark corner of the garden, as low light brings out the bright colors of the leaves. Too much intense sunlight may result in leaves with a scorched, dry, streaky appearance. Water the plant deeply to saturate the root zone, and then allow the top of the soil to dry slightly before watering again, as soggy soil smothers the roots and causes rot. Dracaena Rikki is a good plant for indoors with low or moderate light. If the yellow markings on the leaves begin to fade, move the plant into slightly brighter light but avoid direct, intense sunlight. Dracaena performs best with moderate amounts of water. To water dracaena, water the plant deeply and then allow the soil to drain thoroughly. Allow the top 2 inches of potting mixture to dry before the next watering.

Dracaena janet craig plants, native to tropical Africa, are one of the most popular plants used in homes and offices. Dracaenas thrive on neglect, grow well in low light, and need very little water. These attractive plants have sword- shaped, leathery, dark green, shiny leaves that are about 3 wide and 2ft. in length. When purchased, dracaena plants should have at least 3-5 stalks in the pot; this ensures that the plant will be full as it matures. A dracaena janet craig can be used as a table plant, a floor plant, or a tall, stately tree. This is a strongly upright plant that tends to drop its lower leaves as it ages. The stately 'Janet Craig' plant has huge, sword-shaped, dark-green leaves, can be used as a table plant or floor plant and looks elegant with virtually any type of home decor. Keep your plant out of direct sunlight, as this can scorch its leaves, leaving brown marks. It prefers medium indirect sunlight, but it can tolerate low light as well. Pale leaves and slow growth indicate that it's not getting enough light.

The Brazilian Cherry Tree, scientifically known as Eugenia brasiliensis and commonly referred to as the Grumichama Tree, is a tropical fruiting tree prized for its ornamental value and delicious, cherry-like fruit. Native to Brazil, this tree features glossy evergreen foliage and a naturally dense, symmetrical canopy that makes it a beautiful addition to gardens and edible landscapes alike. Its standout feature is the dark purple to nearly black fruit, which resembles a cherry in both size and appearance. These fruits develop in clusters along the branches and are often described as having a sweet, juicy taste with subtle overtones of grape and plum. The tree’s white, fragrant flowers appear in spring and give way to fruit by early to mid-summer, adding seasonal interest and visual appeal. The Grumichama Tree is well-suited for gardeners seeking a tropical or subtropical fruiting tree that also serves as an eye-catching ornamental specimen. It can be grown in the ground in warm climates or in large containers for patio or greenhouse cultivation. This tree is relatively compact in size, typically maturing to heights of 15 to 25 feet, and can be pruned to maintain a smaller profile if desired. Its adaptability, attractive foliage, and fruit production make it a popular choice for home gardeners, tropical collectors, and enthusiasts looking for a unique and rewarding plant to grow.

Dracaena Lisa is a very widely used indoor floor plant. Its dark green leaves and stems are its defining characteristics. Unlike the very similar Janet Craig, Lisa has much thicker stalks that can be solid green or blended green and tan. Lisa's foliage (in comparison to JC's) is more narrow, compact, shorter in length, and stands more upright. Lisa is very easy to keep healthy, and is highly tolerant to many indoor lighting conditions, including lower light. Like most Dracaenas, it is slow growing, so it can maintain its size and shape for some time without much maintenance. It can tolerate low light (not no light) conditions much better than other interior Dracaena varieties like Mass Cane, Compacta, Marginata, Warnekii, and Rikki. Lisa can also tolerate low light much better than most other houseplants. If placed in a low light area, much care must be taken when watering. Over-watering can happen very easily in low light since a plant's productivity slows as its light decreases. Since Lisa operates on the slow side anyway, the plant can become nearly dormant in low light. Moisture soil or lava moisture should be carefully checked before watering. It can survive well in high light but has the tendency to lose its deep green color. High light conditions will increase the amount of water it will need and can also increase growth and the development of mealy bug.

This very hardy, slow growing plant has a central trunk and stiff glossy featherlike leaves that resemble a fine textured palm. An ancient plant that has been around for nearly forever, it thrives in dry areas, is cold tolerant and is suitable for Sun or shade. The plant is not as prickly as other varieties and its eventual small stature of 3 ft. tall and wide is perfect for use as a specimen plant to accent a tropical garden, in mass plantings such as those that surround the trunk of a palm tree, in patio pots set around the pool, to line a walkway or simply near a mailbox. Easy to grow in a wide range of soils, easily adapts to full Sun or full shade, is drought tolerant once established and is cold hardy down to an occasional 30-deg F. Hardy in USDA plant zones 8-11, it is not recommended to grow this plant outdoors in cooler climates. To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 3 ft. away from other plants or structures. Prefers sand y soil, although will grow in most well-drained garden soils; it is not picky about sunlight, growing in full Sun to full shade.
