Mrs. Steel's act of patriotism is a prime example of how women contributed to the war, not only as spies or nurses but also through financial support and resourcefulness.

The Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 – July 4, 1863) was a decisive Union victory during the American Civil War, often considered a turning point alongside Gettysburg. Vicksburg, Mississippi, was a heavily fortified Rebel stronghold on the Mississippi River, controlling vital supply lines and splitting the Union’s western territories from the east. Capturing it was essential for the Union to regain control of the river and sever the Rebel held territory in two. Major General Ulysses S. Grant led the Union Army of the Tennessee in a brilliant and relentless campaign to take Vicksburg. After months of maneuvering—crossing swamps, diverting rivers, and winning battles at places like Champion Hill and Big Black River—Grant’s forces surrounded the city by mid-May 1863. Unable to take Vicksburg by direct assault (two failed attempts on May 19 and 22 cost many lives), Grant opted for a siege. For 47 days, Union forces bombarded the city with artillery and naval gunboats, while cutting off supplies. Inside, Rebel General John C. Pemberton’s 30,000 troops and the civilian population endured starvation, disease, and constant shelling. Residents resorted to living in caves dug into hillsides to escape the bombardment. One flashpoint occurred in Rhode Island, where the British Royal Navy deployed the HMS Gaspee to patrol Narragansett Bay and crack down on smuggling—a vital economic lifeline for many colonists. The ship’s commander, Lieutenant William Dudingston, became notorious for overstepping his authority, harassing local vessels, and conducting unwarranted searches. His actions enraged Rhode Islanders, who viewed him as a symbol of British overreach and abuse of power. On the night of June 9, 1772, the Gaspee ran aground near Pawtuxet while chasing a packet boat. Seizing the opportunity, a group of local patriots led by John Brown - rumored to be a member of the Sons of Liberty - assembled a raiding party of about 60 men, rowed out under cover of darkness, wounded Dudingston, and set the ship ablaze. The Gaspee Affair was one of the first violent acts of rebellion against British authority and helped galvanize colonial resistance. Its historical significance lies in how it foreshadowed the coordinated revolutionary action to come. The Crown’s failed attempt to punish the raiders—thanks to a wall of silence among colonists—only fueled resentment and led to the formation of the Committees of Correspondence, a key step toward uniting the colonies in the fight for independence.

Called "Pinkie" by her grandmother who commissioned the portrait, Mrs. Barrett requested that her granddaughter be depicted "in an easy, careless attitude." Sarah died within a few months of the portrait's completion, from complications of tuberculosis. A Victorian favorite, Lawrence who was known for his idealized portrayal of childhood added to "Pinkie's" worldwide appreciation. The instructions for assembly were difficult to understand. Once I figured them out, I realized the adhesive for attaching the easel to the back of the cut-out was applied to wrong side of the easel.
