Absolutely loved it! Not super easy to do as a first time wallpaper. It runs the risk of stretching and developing air bubbles, so have the necessary tools on hand, and it’ll work like a charm. Based on an early 18th-century French document, Chinoise Exotique is a grand design depicting Chinese figures hunting exotic Indian animals. This pattern is a classic example of the kinds of chinoiserie patterns developed for export to the European market in the early 1700s. These fabrics became so popular that France passed a law banning them from sale out of fear that they would collapse the French textile market.

Originally designed in 1945 for Gino of Capri restaurant, affectionately known as “Gino’s” by New Yorkers, Scalamandré restored the Zebras wallcovering at this iconic Upper East Side establishment in 1973 after the walls were damaged by fire. Flora Scalamandré, wife of Franco Scalamandré, skillfully hand-drew the signature motif, which would later become the renowned Scalamandré Zebras design. This lively pattern depicts two Zebras prancing around politely placed arrows set against a lively colored ground. The playful and captivating design instantly captivated audiences, quickly joining the product line and ultimately achieving fame through appearances in notable films such as Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums”.

Raphael is one of our most popular printed wallpapers. The pattern gives you treetops in a wide range of color combinations. Palampores, or "Tree of Life" patterns, have their origins in India, where the exotic designs were hand painted and mordant dyed, and exported to Europe and England for use as elaborate bed hangings and curtains. This graceful chinoiserie print was discovered in a small room in the Noble Hardee Mansion in Savannah, Georgia, which has been described as “the last unrestored grand mansion in Savannah”. The house dates back to 1860, and the aged hand-printed paper is thought to have been installed by a decorator who owned the house in the 1960s or 1970s. The paper has widely been attributed to Scalamandré, and it became a mission of ours to bring it back to life, as wallcovering with a matching cotton chintz fabric. It was photographed in sections on-site, redrawn line for line, and matched for its original color of white and grey leaves against an espresso ground. The grandly scaled, nearly four-foot repeat and classic bamboo foliage speak to its adaptation from antique hand-painted Chinese silk wall panels, interpreted in a loose brushstroke style that is typical of more contemporary handprints. New color additions such as Jade and Ciel add a fresh look to this timeless design. Now printed on a 54" nonwoven ground, this mural-like paper features crisp printing, deeply saturated color, and easily paste–wall installation.

Zen gray is a wallpaper with a pattern inspired by the Zen garden of Ryoanji, Japan. The sand of the Japanese stone garden is raked to imitate the waves of water around mountains and islands, symbolized by carefully placed stones. A slow process that creates a meditative calm.

We discovered Lanai on a trip to the Scalamandré archives, unearthing the original hand-printed wallpaper document from a dusty shelf. Immediately, we saw potential in the design’s exuberant tropical vibe and unique layout.
