The two gold crowns refer to the juxtaposition of the English Prince returning triumphant and victorious in his Gothic gold armor and crown contrasted to that of Christ's crown of thorns with a glowing golden halo. Jubilant and elated ladies toss flower petals and banners are flown but all the Prince can see is the reminder that riches, pride, and acclaim are fleeting things. As a portraitist, Victorian Frank Dicksee exhibited at the Royal Academy and was particulary renowned for his series of oil paintings of Medieval Shakespearean characters, following his father, Thomas Francis Dicksee's lead. As an illustrator incorporating classical and Pre-Raphaelite styles, he became famous in his own time. Inspired by the Greek myth of a Corinthian girl who drew a portrait of her beloved, before he departed for war, by tracing the outline of his shadow on a wall to have an image to remember him. Leighton, exchanging the tale to a Gothic castle, altered it to Medieval dress, armor and a beautiful red-haired maiden, adding to the drama there are crusader ships waiting outside the castle walls. Leighton's work bridged the commercial and critical divide earning a place in the Victorians' hearts. Livingston before being presented to the Continental Congress. The document was formally adopted on July 4, 1776, marking the birth of the United States as an independent nation.

The boat glides out of a dark, craggy cave which Cole himself described as "emblematic of our earthly origin, and the mysterious Past." The river is smooth and narrow, symbolizing the sheltered experience of childhood. The figurehead on the prow holds an hourglass representing time.
