Jefferson is alone in his rented room at the Graff House in Philadelphia, where he wrote the first draft of the Declaration in June 1776. Jefferson, a member of the Committee of Five, was tasked with drafting the Declaration, which was later edited by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston before being presented to the Continental Congress. The document was formally adopted on July 4, 1776, marking the birth of the United States as an independent nation.
