Handwoven in wool and originating from France, this 2x11 French Gobelins pictorial tapestry from the early 18th Century is a rare and special new curation from Rug & Kilim—"Mois Grotesques" by Claude Audran le Jeune. On the Design:This vertical panel represents a twin piece from the same "Mois Grotesques" series designed by Claude Audran le Jeune (1708-1709) for the Gobelins manufactory. The design maintains the structured vertical format with compartmentalized ornamental sections on a golden-yellow ground characteristic of the series. This panel features a central mythological figure—likely representing one of the Olympian deities associated with a specific month—seated within an architectural baldaquin or niche with draped fabric elements. The design demonstrates the refined Régence aesthetic that bridged Louis XIV and Louis XV decorative styles, with precisely rendered grotesque ornamentation including acanthus scrolls, foliate garlands, and mythological vignettes organized in vertical progression. The medallion structure in the lower portion contains a secondary allegorical scene framed within an oval cartouche. The colorway employs the same burgundy-aubergine palette against the golden ground as its companion piece, maintaining visual cohesion within the series. This panel exemplifies the exceptional technical achievement of Gobelins weavers during this period, when designs likely involved collaboration between Audran, the young Antoine Watteau, and Alexandre-François Desportes for figural elements.Condition: This antique French tapestry further enjoys good condition for its age and origin—intended for use in wall-hanging projects only.

Beautiful rust antique rug, origin: East Turkestan. Circa: Early 20th century. This antique carpet was made in East Turkestan in the early 20th century. This beautiful rust-colored rug utilizes an adaptation of the classic “hundred and one gifts” design, which is visible in the central field of the antique rug. Unlike some other antique rugs, none of the design elements in this rug are abstracted, creating a very visually interesting design that utilizes heavily contrasting colors. The main ground throughout this magnificent rust antique rug is rust and the main imagery within the central field is shown in a bright ivory color. There are multiple borders within the rug, with the outermost one featuring a classically-inspired design. The inner border that frames the interior design itself is a more solid border of the bright cream color. Between these two borders, there are nature-inspired elements including representations of various leaves and some trees and utilizing multiple colors. There are softer, lighter rust within this design as well as a warm red that contrasts well with the rust ground. These nature elements add a softness that help the central design stand out while framing the main field of the rust antique rug extremely nicely. The use of concentric borders draws the eye toward the central design without taking away from it. The central design of this rust antique rug has three main elements and consists of several different colors, with the main one being the creamy ivory color. These designs are weaved very complex, and their intricate and delicate weaving showcases the skill required to create these magnificent antique oriental carpets.

Made with handwoven wool in Romania originating circa 1900, this 12x15 oversized Bessarabian kilim from Southeast Europe features a golden-ochre field with formal floral medallions arranged in a grid pattern, surrounded by an elaborate Art Nouveau-influenced border. On the Design: A rare Bessarabian antique for its colors, spacious large size and design representing the significant cultural exchange between Western European decorative traditions—particularly French Aubusson tapestry designs—and Eastern European weaving practices during the late 19th century, when Art Nouveau aesthetics influenced traditional craft production throughout the region. Antique Navajos are usually in scatter sizes and larger, room-size pieces are both extremely rare and highly desirable. As perpetually fashionable as they are collectible, traditional Navajo rugs, skillfully woven by members of the Native American Navajo tribe, are similar to Kilims and constructed using similar time-honored techniques. The native American Navajo tribe of New Mexico and Arizona was originally weaving and wearing blankets in the early 19th century, but when they became settled on the reservation, they switched to rugs inspired by Caucasian pieces made by the local traders. The strong and direct patterns are abstract and geometric, the rigorous color palette usually includes one or more natural sheep tones, and the technique is always a flat tapestry weave. Vintage Navajos give a properly informal touch to any room. Nothing is better with American Western decor. Probably crystal springs.
