UPDATE The planks were positioned the wrong way initially but upon trying again they all fit, albeit tightly. Once the alignment was settled, the bookshelf was easy to build. Seems very solid and strong for MDF. The metal frame is a good thickness, not too hideously clunky, about 2cm (less than 1 inch.) I have placed a great deal of books on it, including several heavy coffee table books and textbooks. Only time will tell how well it holds. All in all, very pleased with the product and its Bauhaus-look. Would potentially buy another as my library grows. ORIGINAL Top plank measures 10.5inches while the top bar opening measures 9.5inches.
