These whiskey barrel planters are great. Our family has had three more just like them for 16 years. One is used as a small water feature with a bamboo fountain and the other two as traditional planters. Because of the size and material the soil does not dry out too quickly. For these two new ones, I've converted them into self-watering planters using sturdy 22 inch saucers and 1/2 inch solid-braid nylon rope for wicking the water up into the soil. I am planning to use the planter boxes with my 2 faux cedar shrubs and place them on my small patio but, I have to wait until our most recent snow squall passes and I get everything shoveled out.
