I purchased this as a fathers day gift for my brother. I remember growing up, he had a huge Emmitt Smith poster in his room. "Samuel Smith" by Gilbert Stuart is a famous portrait of Samuel Smith (1752–1839), a distinguished military leader known for his contributions during both the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. During the American Revolutionary War, Samuel Smith served as a colonel in the Continental Army and played a crucial role in several key battles. The Defense of Fort Mifflin (1777) was One of his most notable contributions came during the Philadelphia Campaign, where he commanded Maryland troops in the defense of Fort Mifflin on the Delaware River. Under heavy British bombardment, Smith and his forces managed to hold out for weeks, delaying British naval support and giving George Washington’s army time to regroup after the loss at Germantown. His leadership and resilience in this battle earned him widespread recognition. in the Southern Campaigns, Smith also participated in various operations in the Southern Theater, supporting efforts against British forces in the Carolinas and Virginia. His strategic knowledge and experience as a commander helped strengthen American defenses during the latter years of the war. War of 1812: Smith, then a major general of the Maryland militia, was instrumental in the defense of Baltimore (1814). He organized the city's fortifications and commanded the successful defense against the British, particularly at Fort McHenry, which inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner. His leadership helped prevent the British from capturing Baltimore, a turning point in the war.
