The Sardine collection by Bordallo Pinheiro results from a collaboration between the earthenware factory of Caldas da Rainha, founded in 1884 by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, EGEAC (Lisbon’s cultural and animation municipal entity). And Lisbon’s city council. The original Bordallo Pinheiro’s Sardine, designed in the XIX century, due to its classic three-dimensional nature, became the ideal support for receiving the creative work that EGEAC develops since 2003, within Lisbon’s festivities, which transformed the sardine, iconic fish of Portuguese culture and gastronomy, an international icon of the city and of summer celebrations of the Portuguese capital.

Artist Zoey Riley was born to very conservative and traditional parents, who did not support her interest in fine arts. Zoey pursued her passion for fine art secretly as an adolescent, due to her parent’s restrictions, and used the art she viewed in galleries as her tutor. As soon as she was of age, she fled her hometown to live in New York City to be closer to a fast-paced environment, concentrated on art galleries. Zoey used everything around her to draw inspiration, from the street signs to the dancers seen through the windows of dance studios. Hours and hours are spent by a ceramic artist to painstakingly form, pinch and shape the porcelain clay into these master forms which are not only beautiful and unusual but have the structural integrity to maintain their shapes when fired. The coup de grace is the extreme variation in subtle color and opacity of the reactive glaze - a range from dusty browns and grays to clear golden citron.

The piece arrived very quickly and the quality was what I expected. However, the coloring was different from what I expected. The online photos showed a rust color veining, but in person it was more of a "dirty, earthy green" color veining. The Octopus Medium Vase is a decorative accessory handmade of stoneware by women artisans living at the border of Burma and Thailand. The process they used to create it is challenging and time-consuming. First, the vase is thrown by one artisan; then another artist works by hand to apply the octopus to the profile of the cream vase before it is hand-glazed and fired. The artful application and the dripping of the reactive blue glaze make each piece a one-of-a-kind objet-d'art with a strong French Mediterranean feel.

Hand Painting

L. Bodine grew up in the pastoral lands of Kentucky, using the colors and patterns in nature as his inspiration. As the oldest of nine children, he spent most of his time taking care of his younger brothers and sisters. During his spare time, he used art as an escape from his busy life. Obsessed with the peace of mind that art gave him, he decided to pursue his career as an artist. Although he resides in Kentucky near his family, he spent most of his adult life traveling the country and soaking up all the inspirations. L. Bodine continues to travel, spending his time with nature and studying the different palettes and shapes of the world as inspiration for new art.
