You do need to supply 2 AAA batteries for the remote though. You can just touch the top of the shade to manually control the light or use the remote. There are 3 different light temperatures to suit your preference and within those you may choose brightness as well. I like the nightlight button on the remote to really dim it down. In addition this can be set to turn off at 30, 60, or 120 minutes using the remote. It is the perfect lighting for a dark corner in my office. Wherever you don't have space for a lamp this is ideal. It is decorative and functional.. The shade can be ordered in smooth or pleated and is not fabric. The base is black metal and the shade is black plastic material so I can easily wipe it clean.
