When not in use it is flush with the stovetop which helps create a flat seamless flow on the countertop. When we have used it, it works very well. It's hard to find a replacement for a gas downdraft cooktop, but this one is great! Burners are stronger than previous cooktop (not GE). Downdraft works much better, doesn't pull flames from burners.
