"Battle of the Brandywine" by Frederick Coffay Yohn captures the decisive and intense Revolutionary War battle fought on September 11, 1777, between British forces under General Sir William Howe and the Continental Army led by General George Washington. Fought on September 11, 1777, it was the largest battle of the war in terms of troops engaged, with around 30,000 soldiers on both sides combined. The battle was part of General Sir William Howe's campaign to capture Philadelphia, then the seat of the Continental Congress and the symbolic heart of the Revolution. Although the British won and subsequently occupied Philadelphia, their victory had limited strategic impact in suppressing the broader rebellion. Despite being outmaneuvered and defeated, Washington's army was not destroyed. His leadership during the retreat preserved the Continental Army's strength for future engagements, such as the Battle of Germantown a few weeks later.
