When the advance guard of nearly 240 British soldiers arrived in Lexington, they found about 70 minutemen awaiting them. The Fighting Temeraire is JMW Turner’s tribute to this famous English warship, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) that rescued HMS Victory, Admiral Nelson's front line warship. The artist represents the moment when, on September 5 and 6, 1838, the Temeraire was towed, from the Thames estuary (from Sheerness) to its place of demolition (at Rotherhithe), by a steam tug. The dark and heavy form of the latter is brought to life as an innovative driving force, as evidenced by the tall smoking chimney and the two paddle wheels. It contrasts with the noble whitish silhouette of the Temeraire, which seems to glide, like a phantom vessel on the waves, towards its ultimate end. The Battle of Princeton was a classic meeting engagement, both sides stumbled into one another, and neither expected to fight on the ground where the battle raged. When the American's spotted British troopers around William Clarke's farm, Washington detached Hugh Mercer's brigade to investigate. Mercer ran headlong into the 17th Foot, firmly stationed behind a fence at the end of Clarke's orchard. With the battle, and the war, hanging in the balance, Washington personally led fresh troops onto the field while grapeshot and canister from Joseph Moulder's artillery battery forced the British back towards William Clarke's farmhouse. Washington's counterattack broke the British line, which quickly turned into a rout.
