Handwoven wool, circa 1900-1920, this rare antique European kilim rug is specifically a flatweave of early 20th century Bessarabian descent, featuring cartouche-style blossoms, garland leaf and vine scrolls, roses in the borders. On the Design: Connoisseurs will admire the light blue field and green borders underscore a variety of floral patterns—mostly in a shade of pink called rose, camel tones, indigo blues, forest green, chartreuse green. Keen eyes for detail will appreciate this oversized palace rug and its pattern, too,which is a most unusual find in this provenance, with a clear influence or rather marriage of French neoclassical and Oriental rugs, even Russian sensibilities, as were seen in many Bessarabians. Admirers of the craft will further note that its colors are almost akin to some English needlepoints and Karabagh Kilims—departing from the more abundant uses of rich browns, reds and even pinks and favoring greens with such a gorgeous array of choices.
