There was no way we could put a shelf in this unit. I reached out to customer service and they were wonderful. I have decided that ordering furniture on line holds some risk. Assembly was about 6 hours! Some of the assembly order was not engineered to make it easy, such as the door hinges. It was easier for me to put the hinge on the wall first, and the attach the door to the hinge. Directions weren’t entirely clear, especially when it came to the direction of the curved hinge to the fold out door. I accidentally broke the little flap on it because I had installed it upside down. Again, the order if hinge installment made it a bit more difficult. Really nice, quality, sturdy piece of furniture. No particle board! The deliver was timely; the stand was sent in one box and easily the best-packaged piece of furniture I've ever ordered from anywhere. It took a while to get everything out of the box, but it was worth it considering it was packaged so well that there was no damage! The solid wood has a cherry tint but in most lightings looks pretty neutral-brown as you can see from two of the photos. Assembly wouldn't be challenging if you did it with two people, but I did it myself and it took a few stop-and-go hours with the occasional distraction. I also am not handy at ALL. I will say that I think you'll need a drill for the assembly: if I had one complaint, it would be that I had to re-drill the holes for the door hinges on the inside of one of the cabinets, which didn't line up perfectly, and also widen some of the holes when attaching the back panel. I like the look, and it is big enough for all our electronic components. It sits below a wall mounted 70” tv. Be aware that the package is very heavy, and it takes two people and a lot of patience to assemble it. We used a socket wrench to make assembly easier.
