It is NOT a soft rug, there is no pile at all. It feels more like sisal or jute....firm fibers. Again this works perfect for us in a dining room so the chairs can more easily move. Our previous rug had more pile and it was super difficult to move the heavy chairs. Packaging was perfect, they rolled the rug on a giant super heavy duty cardboard roll.
