Originating from Turkey between 1900-1920, this antique geometric wool rug features a distinct combination of both iconic and seldom-seen Turkish symbols. Flatwoven in high-quality wool, the alternating rows of burgundy red and navy blue with pale green and vibrant orange eye motifs (protective symbols for warding off evil) are finely woven in between an uncommon Turkish symbol representing a wolf’s mouth, though they bear resemblance to the lifeline symbol for maternity and fertility as well. Paired with the bright hooking ‘s’ motifs symbolizing a weaver’s tools, the tone of protection and warding danger permeates this rug’s tribal, cultural significance and rich history.
