Gervex, sometimes considered an Impressionist, was also an academic and classically trained painter who favored larger works including wall panels. A remote fishing village in Denmark, Skagen was a gathering place for many Danish, Norwegian and Swedish artists. This celebratory party was a gathering of many artists, and friends and an important woman painter, Anna Archer with her daughter along with Kroyer himself painted in the white suit.
