There are two round cut outs near the top at the back of the rain barrel and I assume that’s for venting air as the barrel fills as well as when water is dispensed. Or I suppose it could be for overflow There was no diagram of the rain barrel explaining all the nuances. And there are no instructions for setting up other than the spigots. It seems like it is designed to just sit anywhere and gather rain, which would take forever. We've had a Good Ideas rain barrel (80 gal) for about three years now and have been really pleased with it. So we just purchased two of this model (our original one is no longer available) and I'm really happy with how well the dark gray matches our home's charcoal exterior, since they will be visible from the street. Since our rain barrels are made of high-density polyethylene plastic they can be left outdoors even in the winter months so there is no need to modify your downspouts in the spring and fall. The exact shape of the barrels may vary due to availability but the color and size remain true. Because these barrels were originally used to transport food, there may be residual food product odor. The residual odor will dissipate after a few full barrel-filling cycles. We use a ph-balanced, environmentally friendly soap when cleaning so that the water gathered can immediately be used on plants without harm. These barrels keep difficult to break down plastics from adding bulk to landfills and also contain and repurpose stormwater.
