The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Okay, so I must say that I felt bad for my husband, after looking at the many tiny bubble-bags of hardware that came with this desk I could have never built this myself! He was so patient with the building process. We started building about (2) hours before dinner and then went back to it for an hour after. I’ve been promised that tomorrow…before lunchtime, my new desk will be fully assembled. Love the way the desk looks, but the (2) drawers are so tiny…not sure what to put into them other than a few small items (penspencils, and a couple of notepads.
