We used these on our back patio and added faux shrubbery to add some greenery. These are metal and VERY sturdy. You could even put bricks or rocks in the base if you live in a windy spot. We did not need to. Inside, there is a medium level area to fill with dirt to plant. So if you were actually putting living plants, you wouldn't have to pay to fill the entire thing with dirt. I was very pleased with the size and appearance of the two vases exactly what I needed. However, the problem was separating the vases once I removed them from the very sturdy box. They shipped stacked together inside the box and wrapped in plastic, which was probably cost effective, but very impractical from a customers perspective. Long story short, I sprayed WD-40 along the rim and plastic, waited 5 mins, lightly tapped along the rim with a hamper, then pulled on the plastic, and they came a part easily at that point.
