Published in 1876 by arguably the most prolific and recognizable mapmaker Rand McNally, this depiction of Oregon illustrates the vital links the railways provided as centralizing and dispersement tools. By this time, Oregon’s robust rail system allowed Portland to thrive. The City was experiencing a time of great prosperity, and the accessibility of raw materials made investors clamor to build. Portland was home to nearly twenty-thousand residents near the close of the decade. Following the economic boom caused by the Oregon Gold Rush in the 1850s, the state was now primarily supported by the robust lumber industry. The ability to transport large timber from the region via the Willamette River allowed mills in Portland to process it into lumber, and the railroads would take it east to the heart of the country. This flourishing economy led to Portland’s enduring nickname “Stumptown.” While the rest of the state remained mostly agrarian, Portland had become a contemporary city and was rivaled only by San Francisco to the South. The City had suffered from a significant fire in 1873 that destroyed much of the downtown area. The fire resulted in a change to the building codes creating many steel structures that have come to define the distinct aesthetic of the City. Oregon found itself on the edge of modernity but still a rough and tumble western frontier in the 1870s. This distinctive map immediately transports the viewer back in time and is truly an authentic piece of cartographical history.

This map was produced by Julius Bien, a German-born American lithographer with a distinctive style. The superior technical illustration expertise marks Bien's legacy. Bien also illustrated and printed Audubon's famous work, The Birds of America. He utilized the latest science of the time to produce maps with extremely accurate scale and detail, printed using a technique called chromolithography and stunningly depicted in this 1889 illustration of Multnomah County. The county gets its name from the Chinookan word for 'lower river,' and while geographically the smallest county in Oregon, it is the most populous. Though still notated as East Portland here, the two cities had incorporated in 1871. The historical Barber Block building was completed in 1889 and is recognized for its late Victorian architecture. This cadastral map, which illustrates the boundaries and ownership of land parcels, shows Portland in a time of significant expansion. Already a thriving inland port with ocean access via the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Though this was a substantial reason for the cities prosperity, it also contributed to its reputation as a dangerous place with a high number of saloons, bordellos, and gambling dens; its character as a sober frontier city had been lost. Portland's population increased in the late 20th century with nearly fifty thousand residents by 1889 it was experiencing an economic boom and was the largest port in the Northwest. These maps were an essential tool for merchants and residents alike, and the signature aesthetic transports the viewer back in time.

Published in the same year, Oregon joined the Union as the 33rd State; this map was produced in a time of great transition for the Northwestern area. It would take another four decades for Washington to achieve statehood. Lewis and Clark had concluded their trans-continental trek fifty years prior, and the region was experiencing rapid growth and development. The logging and commercial fishing industries supported by the ports in Seattle and Portland respectively allowed the territory to thrive and established economies that endure today. The territory had been established in 1848, and settlers were building farms and ranches in the plains of the East while enjoying fruits of the sea and forest in the West. The Northwest Territories had throngs of settlers coming from the East as missionaries and miners, while the ports saw immigrants arriving from Asia. The thriving ports had a reputation as rough places with numerous saloons and gambling dens frequented by sailors from around the world. The Fraser Canyon Gold Rush in British Columbia started in 1858, had eager miners traveling north on the Oregon Trail, and merchants throughout the western portion of the territory enjoyed a robust trade in outfitting and provisions. Mining would continue to be a part of the region's economy, and prospecting would cause the most significant population expansion at the close of the century with the Yukon Gold Rush. The unique aesthetic of this representation immediately transports the viewer back in time and links the past and present with its distinct characteristics.

The Colton family were prolific mapmakers in the 19th century, and their distinctive style and recognizable aesthetic transport the viewer back in time. This depiction of the Washington and Oregon territories published in 1880 is no different. The Oregon Railway and Navigation Company had been founded the year before this map’s publication. They would remain in operation until 1910 when Union Pacific would absorb the company and complete their dominance as the rail provider on the West Coast. With the completion of these lines, the region was able to enjoy access to the eastern reaches of the United States and transport valuable raw materials out. With this greater access, the two ports in Seattle and Portland respectively were allowed to start competing with the principal port in San Francisco to their south. The region’s primary economic driver at this time was lumber, though in the next decade the Yukon Gold Rush would transform the landscape, and culture forever. The Southwest portion of the territory had been admitted to the Union in 1859, while Washington would have to wait until 1889 to receive statehood. Settlements in the East were primarily agricultural, and Christian missionary’s flocked to this region. This piety was in stark contrast to the western reaches of the territory, which were considered wild frontiers with sailors arriving en masse and cultures merging. The rich history of the region has been well documented since Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean in the Northwest in 1806.
