we had someone build it for us so i can’t comment on how hard it was to build, but it took him about 3 hours it is two separate pieces that do not connect so keep that in mind, we knew that before purchasing and it’s not an issue for us. wish the hooks weren’t so low so that we could sit on the bench, but it does the job and we love the way it looks! shoe compartments are a little narrow so some shoes need to be at an angle to fit, but they fit nonetheless ). I bought this in white and it is beautiful. The reason for the four stars is one of the 6 bolts & nuts had a defect and would not fasten together. We spent about 2 hours and finally after an unsuccessful trip to the hardware store to buy a replacement, we ended up using the bolt and a dowel glued in place since it was the upper back corner. This hall tree was the exact piece I was looking for our entryway! It wasnt difficult to assemble at all and once screwed together, it feels sturdy. I do recommend securing it to the wall for safety because it could be top heavy. Its helpful to have two people for assembly because it gets a bit heavy.
