This is a reproduction of Amos Doolittle's A View of the Town of Concord,1775, Plate 2. Amos enlisted in the Patriot army, and joined the troops at Cambridge, Mass. just ten days after the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Tagging along with him on the ride to Cambridge was his artist friend Ralph Earl. They both visited the battlefields of Lexington and Concord, and sought out eyewitnesses and minutemen who fought the battles. He asked them what happened, where and when, and then he told Earl what to draw. From Earl’s drawings and the eyewitness accounts he gathered, Amos Doolittle engraved four copper plates of the battle. The first print shows the Battle of Lexington, with Maj. Pitcairn at the head of the regular grenadiers. It also shows the party who first fired on the provincials at Lexington, part of the Provincial company of Lexington and the British regular companies on the road to Concord.

This is a reproduction of Edward Percy Moran's The First Resistance. The illustration depicts the Colonists confronting British soldiers at Lexington, MA. When the advance guard of nearly 240 British soldiers arrived in Lexington, they found about 70 minutemen awaiting them. The British troops were ordered to seize and destroy military supplies, including weapons and ammunition, that were reportedly stored by colonial militia in the towns of Lexington and Concord. The British intended to assert their authority over the rebellious colonies and suppress any signs of resistance.

During the Battle of Yorktown the combined American and French forces, including those under the Marquis de Lafayette, trapped British General Cornwallis’s army, leading to its surrender. The Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman and major general in the Continental Army, played a key role in the campaign by leading troops in Virginia and coordinating with French naval forces to encircle the British. James Armistead Lafayette, born enslaved in Virginia, served as a spy for the American cause under Lafayette’s command. Posing as a runaway slave, he infiltrated Cornwallis’s camp and gathered critical intelligence on British plans, which he relayed to Lafayette. His contributions were vital to the success at Yorktown. After the war, the Marquis de Lafayette supported Armistead’s petition for freedom, which was granted in 1787, and Armistead adopted the surname "Lafayette" in honor of his commander.
