I ordered this cage for a single female juvenile gerbil. Gerbils LOVE having burrowing and digging space, so the depth of this cage is very good. That said, it's too small for an adult size gerbil or more than one juvenile (young) gerbil. Also, it's difficult to attach a wheel because of the shape of the roof. (I always attach the base of my wheel to the top so that my gerbil doesn't chew the plastic). I did replace the wire ladder and shelf with wooden ones for safety so my gerbil's toes don't get caught. I do like the shape of the cage overall and that it has a top and front door. If you have a very small hamster or gerbil, this would be a good cage. We have 4 kids (all 11 and under) and 5 prey driven dogs. I needed a super safe place to keep our guinea pigs and this critter cabinet is absolutely perfect for that! We can easily see them doing all their guinea pig stuff. Assembly took me about 3 hours by myself. Directions were easy to follow and I didn’t end up missing anything so the frustration level was nice and low. The lights are our favorite touch. We can see them any time we want but they have a nice dark hideout just in case they need it. I don’t think the access to the hideout is a big deal. If you absolutely need to grab one you can pull out the tray some. Our piggies loved their new home and I also love the peace of mind it gives me knowing they aren’t in a wire cage anymore where my dogs could accidentally get too rough and break them out lol I definitely would recommend this cage. This small animal home was far better than expected. It is gorgeous and very functional by allowing ample storage under. The tray comes up to keep moisture from going over the sides, although small animals could kick paper bedding over the side. It is a really easy to clean dwelling. We have tried lots of different systems for guinea pigs in the past, this has been by far the best. We have two guinea pigs (they are on the smaller side) in this home, and they love it.
