If you're intimidated by wood crown, try foam! I'm actually very impressed with how real it looks. Installing them on our laundry cabinets was a breeze. We used a simple handsaw to cut miters. Glued it onto the cabinet, caulked some seams, and wa-la! Before painting, we did a quick sand and then two coats of paint. One thing about the foam I really like is once it's painted it looks smooth without any brush strokes -- looks factory painted just like the cabinets. Amazing...I grappled with buying these columns for 2 years, because of the non-refundable policy, so I had to be sure. I have a small porch so I knew I couldnt get the columns to wide or the proportions would look odd. So I used makeshift cardboard and the like to determine what to buy...I made the best decision with the 5.63 width columns they look amazing. My contractor bought 5 wood post from our local big box store and used brackets to install them on the porch. He used his nail gun to fasten each wrap to the wood post, he said it was rather simple to install. Next he caulked all the small nail gun holes and painted ( per instructions for winter protection) looks amazing.
