Lincoln's Letter to Mrs. Bixby Referred to as "the most beautiful letter ever written", President Lincoln's letter to Mrs. Bixby captured the reality of the war and the painful tasks involved as a President. "Benjamin Lincoln" by Charles Willson Peale is a depiction of the American Revolutionary War general known for his role in several major battles and the British surrender at Yorktown. Lincoln’s early contributions came in 1776 when he organized and led militia forces from Massachusetts to reinforce the Continental Army. Appointed a major general in the Continental Army in 1777, Lincoln was sent to assist in the defense of New York. He joined General Horatio Gates in the Northern Campaign and played a crucial role in the Saratoga Campaign. In 1778, Lincoln was appointed commander of the Southern Department of the Continental and tasked with defending the Charleston against a British force led by General Sir Henry Clinton. After a prolonged siege, he surrendered Charleston on May 12, 1780, marking the worst American defeat of the war, with over 5,000 troops captured. Despite this setback, Lincoln was paroled and later exchanged, returning to service without losing Washington’s confidence. Lincoln’s resilience shone through in the war’s final stages. In 1781, he served as General George Washington’s second-in-command at the Siege of Yorktown. On October 19, 1781, Lincoln had the honor of accepting Cornwallis’s surrender on behalf of the American forces—a symbolic redemption after Charleston. His presence at Yorktown underscored his steady leadership in the campaign that effectively ended major combat operations in the war.
