It's actually egg carton foam, which is usually flimsy and unsupportive. We got an 8 inch, it took around 3 days to completely inflate and it's lumpy. After inflating, when laying on it it is sooo comfortable!! We were pleasantly surprised because of the lumpyness and foam style we thought it would be uncomfortable but we were wrong.
