The two gold crowns refer to the juxtaposition of the English Prince returning triumphant and victorious in his Gothic gold armor and crown contrasted to that of Christ's crown of thorns with a glowing golden halo. Jubilant and elated ladies toss flower petals and banners are flown but all the Prince can see is the reminder that riches, pride, and acclaim are fleeting things. As a portraitist, Victorian Frank Dicksee exhibited at the Royal Academy and was particulary renowned for his series of oil paintings of Medieval Shakespearean characters, following his father, Thomas Francis Dicksee's lead. As an illustrator incorporating classical and Pre-Raphaelite styles, he became famous in his own time.
