Why are the houses sideways in Charleston? When the city's first streets were laid out in 1680, residential lots were long and deep but had little street frontage. Placing the house sideways on the lot made the best use of space. This also allowed the home to take full advantage of the prevailing southerly breezes, necessary in the hot summer climate. Perfect layout for a functional birdhouse that provides a home for small birds. The roof is topped with red cedar shingles, has a 1.25” hole, and has lots of details like a real house. With better insulation in houses these days, it has become difficult for bats to find shelter. This bat house makes it easier for several types of small bats to find shelter. The best place to hang is in the gable to protect the bat house from direct sunlight and heat.
