The San Felipe was one of the most beautiful Spanish ships in the 1600s. Launched in 1690, it had 96 cannons and was the lead ship of the feared Spanish Armada. It was powerful enough to go up against the most formidable ships in the French and British navies. In 1705, the San Felipe and 11 other Spanish ships waged a furious and heroic battle against 35 British ships. After 24 hours of fighting, the San Felipe was captured but was so badly damaged that it could not be salvaged as a prize. It sank with several tons of gold.

The vessel was the most extravagantly decorated warship in the Royal Navy, completely adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings. The ship was later renamed Sovereign and then Royal Sovereign. It was destroyed by fire in 1697 in Chatham.

Layers of vanishes are applied; the hull is then smoothly sanded between coats to create a mirror effect. This model was built according to scale through original plans, pictures and drawings. Extensive research threw original plans and pictures makes Old Modern Handicrafts model look authentic. This four mast brig-schooner with crossed foresail was built in Cádiz at the 'Echevarrieta and Larrinaga' shipyards. She was launched on march 5th 1927. Since then, she has sailed more than a million and a half nautical miles through all the seas of the world and calling at the most important ports in the course of 80 years.

The Black Pearl, originally Wicked Wench, is a fictional ship in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. The Black Pearl is easily recognized in the screenplay by her distinctive black hull and sails. This is an advantage in more than one way. Not only do the black sails act as an intimidation tactic, but Pearl's crew can put out the deck lamps for added stealth at night. The ship was originally named Wicked Wench before she was ordered burned and sunk by Lord Beckett[citation needed]. It was later raised from the sea floor by Davy Jones after making a pact with Jack Sparrow who rechristened her the Black Pearl. She is said to be ''nigh uncatchable''. Indeed, in the three films she either overtakes or flees all other ships, including the Interceptor (regarded as the fastest ship in the Caribbean) and the Flying Dutchman (which is actually faster against the wind). Her speed is derived from the large amount of sails she carries. She is noted in At Worlds End as being ''The only ship as what (which) can outrun the Flying Dutchman.'' The Black Pearl is one of the locations that can be visited in the Port Royal world of Kingdom Hearts II.

Built primarily with dense southern live oak, its hull was 21 inches thick in an era when 18 inches was common. Paul revere forged the copper spikes and bolts that held the planks in place. The 204-foot-long ship was first put to sea in 1798 and its most famous era of naval warfare was the War of 1812 against Britain when it captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five warships, including the H.M.S. Guerriere. It was during the ferocious battle with the Guerriere that British seamen, astonished at how their cannonballs were bouncing off the constitution's hull, cried out, ''Sir, her sides are made from iron'' hence, the nickname, ''old ironsides.'' the constitution today is a national landmark and is docked in boston.

Impressive model! I haven't even removed it from the packaging as yet. I am a woodworker and planning to construct a case for it as I did for the Independence, a model I finished this year. Only question I have is about the masts when first received. Upon opening the top of the shipping box I remember all the sails were 90 degrees to the hull. Now after 2 days, all the sails are 30 degrees to the left. I included a shot looking down at the model. I was interested to know if others have noticed this or am I mistaken? Also found this after unpacking (see picture) of rear mast warped at top. The other noticeable item was the size of the rigging blocks, obviously too large but can be overlooked as they seem to accentuate the model when viewed as a whole.. Greg. Gilroy, CA. The skipjack arose near the end of the the 1800s. Dredging for oysters, prohibited in 1820, was again made legal in 1865. Boats of the time were unsuitable, and the bugeye developed out of the log canoe in order to provide a boat with more power adapted to the shallow waters of the oyster beds. The bugeye was originally constructed with a log hull, and as the supply of appropriate timber was exhausted and construction costs rose, builders looked to other designs. They adapted the sharpies of Long Island Sound by increasing the beam and simplifying the sail plan. The result was cheaper and simpler to construct than the bugeye, and it quickly became the predominant oystering boat in the bay. Debate remains to this day about the origins of the name. Some speculate it came from a name New England fisherman called the flying fish, bonita. Still others claim it is derived from an archaic English term, meaning an ''inexpensive yet useful servant.'' Marylands oyster harvest reached an all-time peak in 1884, at approximately 15 million bushels of oysters. The oyster harvest has since declined steadily, especially at the end of the 20th century. The size of the fleet has likewise declined. New skipjacks were built as late as 1993, but a change in the law in 1965 allowed the use of motor power two days of the week. As a result, few of the boats are operated under sail in commercial use; instead, a pushboat is used to move the skipjack, and little dredging is done except on the days that power is allowed. At one time, the number of skipjacks produced is estimated at approximately 2000; today, they number about 30. The future of the fleet remains in doubt as efforts continue to restore the productivity of the oyster beds. The skipjack was designated the state boat of Maryland in 1985.

For 1953, Castoldi decided to focus on setting top speed records. He commissioned an 800kg-class three-point hydroplane hull to be built by Cantieri Timossi, a hydroplane builder on Lake Como, near Milan… The hull was dubbed Arno XI. For the engine, he turned to the new up and comers of the auto racing scene – Scuderia Ferrari… On the morning of October 15, 1953, Achille Castoldi succeeded in smashing the 800kg class speed record with an average ''flying kilometer'' two-way speed of 150.49 mph. He followed up the performance later that day by setting another record in the ''24 nautical miles'' event with an average speed of 102.34 mph… Arno XI was restored in the early 1990s and was put up for auction at the Coy's Festival at Silverstone in 1997 where it did not sell. It was photographed skimming across the water as recently as September 2004, along with many other vintage racing boats...

The name of the Cutty Sark tall ship comes from the short shirt worn by the flee-footed witch in the Robert Burns Poem, Tam o'Shanter. Designed by Hercules Linton in Dumbarton, Scotland, the Cutty Sark was launched in 1869. The Cutty Sark was initially designed and meant for trading tea with China. Crafted to race across the globe to sack immense profits before other European traders, the Cutty Sark was built for speed. In the memorable race between the Cutty Sark and Thermopylae in 1872, the Cutty Sark lost her rudder after passing through the Sunda Straight and arrived in London a week after their competitor. What makes the Cutty Sark the hero of this race was that she continued the race with a makeshift rudder instead of putting into port for repairs, and in spite of that only lost by a week. Inevitably, the clipper ships lost out to the more powerful steam boats, which were more reliable, and thus returned goods more consistently. The Cutty Sark won the reputation as the fastest ship in her size when she ran 360 nautical miles in 24 hours during a run for Australian Wool trade. The Cutty Sark is the world's sole surviving extreme slipper, with the majority of her hull fabric surviving from her original construction in the 1860s. The Cutty Sark is preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich, which is in south-east London.

The Arbella or Arabella was the flagship of the Winthrop Fleet on which, between April 8 and June 12, 1630, Governor John Winthrop, other members of the Company and Puritan emigrants transported themselves and the Charter of the Massachusetts Bay Company from England to Salem, thereby giving legal birth to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. John Winthrop is reputed to have given the famous "City upon a Hill" sermon aboard the ship. Also on board was the first female poet to be published from the New World, Anne Bradstreet and her family. The ship was at first known as the Eagle. Its name was changed in honor of Lady Arabella Johnson, who was a member of Winthrops company, along with her husband, Isaac Johnson. Lady Arabella was the daughter of Thomas Clinton, 3rd Earl of Lincoln.

The Fighting Temeraire is JMW Turner’s tribute to this famous English warship, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) that rescued HMS Victory, Admiral Nelson's front line warship. The artist represents the moment when, on September 5 and 6, 1838, the Temeraire was towed, from the Thames estuary (from Sheerness) to its place of demolition (at Rotherhithe), by a steam tug.
