Gable vents work to provide ventilation, releasing stagnant air, preventing damage from humidity, and optimizing temperature control. Gable vents are particularly useful during the summer months when hot air rises and is trapped in the attic, where it can transfer itself down through the ceiling and back into the level below, decreasing the effectiveness of air conditioning systems A gable vent is located at the attic area, commonly on the exterior wall where the two planes of a sloping roof join, forming a triangle. The gable can be any symmetrical shape, but the triangle is among the most common. Other vent shapes include rectangles, steeples, circles, and octagons. Gable vents are fitted with horizontal ventilation slats called louvers. You can add a mesh screen to be placed behind the vent. This allows air to circulate while keeping outside elements where they belong. A gable mounted ventilator helps to push air through the louvers. The ventilator removes air from the attic through the use of turbines or fans. The gable ventilator commonly requires no carpentry, as it is mounted on the interior of the wall behind the gable, however, electrical installation is required.

Urethane faux wood shutters stay true to authentic wood by not only having a wood grain, but also by having the ability to be either gel-stained or painted. Longevity of this faux wood material is priceless, without sacrificing the real wood appearance of the shutters.

Purchased the Riverwood style. Painted them but have not installed yet. They arrived primed, but primer is tacky…sticky. I have had to put 2 heavy coats of paint on them. Still painting…waiting for paint coats to dry and not be sticky either. Only concern is the shutters are not as sturdy as I expected (why the 4 stars) and hoping during installation they will not be damaged. You will love this vent. It's well built and works perfectly. I was initially worried about the size because my old vent measured 22 inches, and the only replacement I could find was this 21-inch version. My plan was to return it if it didn't fit. I have a round brick opening, and I was wondering how I would fill a 1-inch gap around the new vent after installation. When I went to remove the old vent from outside while on a ladder, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was only held in place with finish nails. It also had a round wooden frame attached around the outer edge that fit against the brick. I pushed the old vent into the wall cavity, and the new vent fit perfectly over the existing brick molding. After making sure it was level, I nailed it in place, applied caulk, touched up the paint, and the job was done. Yes, I did have to leave the old vent inside the wall cavity, but it wasn't causing any issues and saved me from having to remove additional material. Overall, the installation was much easier than expected, and the vent looks and works great. Highly recommended.cavity which I didn't like,but was not tearing off the brick molding to retrieve it.. It's almost perfect for where I put it. I have a very high (~12') octagonal window in my bedroom, and it's impossible to find a shade that's right for it. But the sun shines in that window right in my eyes and wakes me up at 6am every morning, so I wanted to cover that window without making it look ridiculous. I have white plantation shutters on the lower windows, so it looks nice with those. The reason I didn't give it a higher rating is because there was a choice between "functional" and "non-functional" versions of this cover, but the terms weren't defined. I assumed they meant that functional has moving slats, and non-functional was slats that don't move. So I ordered the functional version to be sure I could close them all the way But what they meant was that functional has holes between the slats (for allowing airflow in an attic, I guess), and non-functional is solid - no holes. I should have gotten the non-functional version, because it would have blocked all the light. But I couldn't wait another day to get rid of that early morning light, so I just installed it right away and started getting the benefit of blocked light in the morning. In needing a replacement for the Gable Vents we were at odds if we could find anyone to craft one of wood--needing a true craftsman to do that but we located these and they did one better by being of composite material so they will last longer.. Beth P. Thu Jul 16 2015
