We specifically bought this bookcase because the description stated the shelves were metal. Upon arrive, however, the shelves were MDF (manufactured wood) which is the very thing we were trying to avoid. As advertised! I used two of them in original condition and they fit well immediately. I used two more (and possibly a third) after cutting a couple of inches off the back. The cuts are very clean and look like they were cut like that from the beginning. The anti-slip surface grips particularly well with heavier objects.
